Marblehead Junior Race Week 2012
ANNUAL RITE OF PASSAGE: MARBLEHEAD JUNIOR RACE WEEK
MARBLEHEAD MA (July 9, 2012) -- An annual rite of passage for local young sailors, the 57th Marblehead Junior Race week or MJRW as the kids call it, will occur July 23rd through the 25th. Hundreds of children from across New England descend upon Marblehead Harbor to test their racing skills, reacquaint with friends from previous summers and make new friends. The competition ranges from newbie Opti greenhorns trying to find their way around the race course to Collegiate and even Olympic aspirants.
As part of this year’s Marblehead Junior Race Week, Pleon Yacht Club will also be hosting the US Sailing Area A Smthye singlehanded eliminations. Young Laser sailors will be competing for the right to represent the New England region at the Chubb US Junior National Championship this August in San Francisco.
MJRW is about the children but many adults play an active role providing logistical support from the shore and on the water. Notably Boston, Corinthian, Eastern and Manchester Yacht Clubs all supply support boats and volunteers. Many of the same adults and some of the children follow this opening act with participation later in the week at the Sperry NOOD Marblehead Race Week, also know as the “senior” race week.
Parents of sailors to the merely curious will have great views of the action from Fort Sewall and Chandler Hovie Park.
