JOHN F. AHERN, JR., TROPHY
New England Junior Boardsailing Championship
From John's days of sailing Yankee Dory's, Indians and Star boats at Squantum Yacht Club in the early 1930's to participation in several Newport to Bermuda and Marblehead to Halifax races, his enthusiasm for the sport of yacht racing was indisputable.
Yachtsmen, from one-design racer to 12-meter skipper, eagerly awaited his stimulating columns that appeared in the Boston Globe. As Yachting Editor since 1939 until his death in 1983, undoubtedly no one has written more to promote the sport in New England than John F. Ahern, Jr. Every summer he could be found at a number of events contributing much of his time and energy to the advancement of sailing. The praise bestowed by his friends and fellow yachtsmen is indicative of his lifetime dedication to the sport.
The Ahern Trophy, donated by the Boston Globe, is awarded annually to the winner of the New England Junior Boardsailing Championship.
